» Chat update

I have posted an update about the status of the chat room on the Chat page (and no, it's not back online).  The update is about how to get continued access to the original chat room, which is now being run by Wife Smasher.

» Latest changes

Today I disabled the "Most Active Members" list.  It seemed like a good idea at the time, but it has caused nothing but problems.

I have also disabled pasting (as in "copying and pasting") into rants and responses for members (the public already couldn't paste).  There's no need for pasting, and it encourages flooding.  It also allows pictures to be pasted into rants, which has been abused a lot lately.

» Ace and his antics

I'm sure most of you are aware of what happened on this site recently - the upshot of which being that Ace got banned.

Just so that you know the facts, Ace didn't start the problem.  He just joined in the fun.  Nevertheless, he committed the cardinal sin of this website - he divulged personal information about another member of the site (me, in this case).  If any of you are wondering why that's so terrible, let me remind you that the only reason that you all enjoy this website so much is that it's completely anonymous.  Needless to say I have the email address of every one of you, and the real name of several of you, and I could (if I wanted to) post those details next to your tagname on every rant and response you make.  I know full well that if I did that even ONCE, then no-one would ever trust this site again.

The integrity of this site lies almost completely in its anonymity.

So I repeat:  Personal details are sacred.  Not just mine, but everyone's.  If Ace had posted personal details about ANYONE, the same consequences would have applied.

Also, be aware that the person that started the whole thing has been banned as well.  And no, I'm not going to say who that was.

As for poor old Ace, yes - I will reinstate him (I'm impressed that a petition got organised, and even signed).  But I'll wait for a little while.  Consider it a "time-out".

Consider this a last warning - for EVERYONE.  If ANY personal details (name, email address, website, YouTube video, etc) of ANY member is EVER posted on this site, then the person responsible for posting them will be banned for life and never reinstated.  And before you think about doing it anonymously, be warned:  it's easier than you might think to ascertain the member behind an anonymous rant (or response).

» Adjustment to the scoring system

New adjustment to the scoring system:  Rants visible to members only are now no longer worth any points at all.  They were worth 3 points, even though members could ignore the rules when writing them.  Members have been abusing this, writing all sorts of garbage rants just to get their points up.

This change is retroactive, meaning that all points from all members-only rants have been removed from all members' scores.

Public rants are still worth 10 points, but you need to abide by the rules, or potentially lose 100 points per violating rant and run the risk of having your login banned.

» For all the mathematically challenged people on this site...

Regarding rant #13860...

You never "lose" points.  The statistics on the left are (by default) "from the lst 30 days".  If you were very active on a particular day 30 days ago, then tomorrow when you visit the site again all the points from that day (now 31 days ago) will no longer be counted.  Your score will go down, but you haven't actually lost any points.

Note:  The points will still be on the "all time" list....

» New changes to the Top 10 system

I read a recent suggestion that people who have bullshit rants (rants that violate the rules) deleted should lose points from the Most Active Members list.  I agreed with that suggestion.  I'm sick of people putting bullshit rants on the site, and anything that discourages them is a good idea, as far as I'm concerned.

So, effective immediately, you lose 100 points from the MAM list every time one of your rants is deleted.  You will be reminded of this in the email you get telling you your rant was deleted.

This change is retroactive.  A tally has been kept against your login name of all the times one of your rants has been deleted, so those points have been automatically deducted.  Some Active Members have dropped out of the Top 10 list as a result.

» More changes today

Statistics:  The statistics in the left margin (number of rants and responses, as well as the Most Active Members) can now be selected from Today, last 30 days, last 90 days and all time.

Resend Verification Emails:  Some members have not ever been able to log into the site because they never received their verification email.  There is now a facility on the sign-up page to have that verification email resent to the email address that you used when you originally registered with the site.

» Changes today...

The following changes were made to the site today:

  • (requested by one of our members) If you're a logged-in member, you now have finer control over who can respond to your rant.  You can select that either anyone can respond, no-one can respond, or (the new option) only other members can respond.
  • Anyone can now easily share any rant via Facebook (any rant except members-only rants or Admin Blog entries, that is).  Look for the Share on Facebook link under each rant.
  • If you are a logged-in member and create a rant that violates the rules, then when that rant is discovered and deleted you will now automatically receive an email, warning you that you have received a black mark against your name.  Accumulate too many black marks and your login ID (and possibly your IP address) will be banned.  Everyone's "black mark" count has been reset to zero to start things off and make it fair.  And no, I'm not going to tell you exactly how many warning emails you will receive before you're banned.  Just know that it's a very small number...
Enjoy.

» Another change to the Top 10 system

The Top 10 Most Active Members list has been slightly adjusted:  It now only shows statistics from the last 90 days.

The reason for this is that if a high-ranking member leaves the site and doesn't return, they will eventually fall off the MAM list.  This means that the list really will reflect active members.

» Changes to the Top 10 system

The following changes have been made to the Top 10 system:

  • If you're a logged-in member, your name and score (but not your rank) are always displayed, even if you're not in the Top 10, so you can see just how many points you need to get into the Top 10
  • Your name and score are displayed in bold
  • You can now opt out of having your name appear in the Top 10.  Update your profile and look for the new tick-box

» How to get banned from this site

Members, please be aware:  If you post a bullshit rant to this site (one that violates the rules) - and make it visible to the public - then you get a black mark against your name.  Once you accumulate enough of these black marks, your login gets banned.

I will email you a warning before that happens.

Creating bullshit rants just to get your name higher up on the "Most Active Members" list is the fastest way to get banned.

iGornet and The President, you're already heading in that direction....

» You can now add VIDEO rants

It is now possible to add VIDEO rants to IamPissedOff.com.

The video must come from YouTube.  If a video is available on YouTube, it is possible to add it to your rant on IamPissedOff.com.  If you have a video that is not on YouTube that you want to have shown on IamPissedOff.com, you must upload it to YouTube first (create yourself a YouTube account if necessary).

The video must show you or someone else being pissed off, or it must show the thing that you're pissed off about.  If the video does not show any of these, the entire rant (and all responses) will be deleted.

Video rants can be easily spotted on the Read 'em All page:  Look for the YouTube icon icon.

» From Admin: Here are your changes....

Well, you demanded changes, and here they are....

  • The site has a new layout, perhaps a little less dated.  There's a new logo being designed for the top part of the site as I write this - stay tuned
  • To protect yourself from impersonation, you can now create yourself a membership to the site and log in before you create your rants.  Only logged-in members can put a tagline/nickname/signature on their rant (it is added automatically)
  • Logged-in members can avoid the rules (but only if they make their rant invisible to the general public)
  • Logged-in members can see ALL rants, not just public ones
  • Logged-in members can have their own avatar/icon/image, replacing the George W Bush one
  • Anyone (public or members) can tick a box to prevent responses to their rants.  Some of the responses lately have been pretty horrific
  • Members' tags/nicknames are shown in the list of all rants, so it's easy to skim for rants by a particular member, or from any registered member
  • Any rant (except members-only ones) can be submitted to our Twitter page by ticking a box when filling in the rant
Comments/feedback are welcome....

» Admin: Changes to this site are a-coming...

I've been thinking long and hard about how to improve the site.  I've gotten some good feedback lately, especially from one of our regulars (I won't name names or he'll be branded an ass-kisser).

There's really no way to prevent the thing I hate the most about this site - people not posting genuine rants of anger.  I've resigned myself to the fact that on a totally anonymous forum where people don't have to log in, people will say any damn thing they want.  Apart from banning a few keywords, there's little I can do to enforce my rules, other than monitor the rants and delete the rubbish - I time-consuming activity that I'm getting sick of doing.

But here's what I can, and will, do....

  1. Give people the option of creating accounts and logging in.  You will need a real email address to do so (of course)
  2. You won't be able to "tag" your rants unless you're logged in.  The site will automatically append your tag to every rant, and do it with a unique format that non-logged-in ranters won't be able to duplicate, so that you will know that the tag is genuine.  And you won't be able to choose "Admin" as a tag.
  3. Tags will be shown in the list of all rants, so you can quickly skim for rants from people you're interested in
  4. I will allow logged-in members to post rants that only other members can see.  There will be an option when you're writing your rant to make it visible to the public or to members only (I haven't decided which will be the default yet).  There will be no rules for "members-only" rants!  You will be able to say anything you like (such as "Hey, where is everybody?").  However, if you make such rule-violating, non-pissed-off rants visible to the general public then a "three strikes and you're out" rule will apply, and your tag will be banned
  5. Anyone (members or the public) will be able to post a rant in such a way that responses are blocked, i.e. no-one can respond to the rant.  A warning notice will go next to this option saying something like "A lot of the regulars on this site have a reputation for being nasty, so if you have delicate sensibilities then use this option to block such nastiness"
  6. I have created a Twitter account (http://twitter.com/i_am_pissed_off).  I had an idea that I would make this a (world's first!) public twitter account, meaning that I would publish the account's password on this site, and anyone could use the account to tweet about what's pissing them off.  A neat idea, but the problem with that is that once a person is logged in, that person could change the password and effectively take control of the Twitter account, blocking everyone else from using it.  What I will do instead is set it up so that when people (members only) are posting rants there will be an option to "publish this rant to Twitter" (if it's under 160 characters)
  7. I'm going to revamp the look-n-feel of this site to make it more modern-looking (and finally get rid of George Dubbya's photo)
There is no timeframe for these updates.  I'm a busy professional and I developed and maintain this site in my spare time.

Comments and further suggestions are welcome.

» For OccuLTisT, from Admin

Thanks for your suggestions in rant 6807, OccuLTisT.  I'm seriously considering them.  I'm always willing to add some coding to the site, but only if I feel it will make a difference to anything...

The main problems I have with the way this site is going are (in order):

  1. The amount of time I spend going through this site deleting the posts that are not genuinely pissed off.  Just people saying anything they want because the site is totally anonymous.  You're right - it IS pollution, and I'm sick of taking the time out of my day to police it.  I could just let it go, but my vision for the site is to have a place where people can rant about what they're pissed off about, and if they come to the site and see that's there's nothing there but idiots flaming each other, then they'll simply leave without ranting.  I don't want that kind of site.
  2. I do have an issue with people flaming each other, or writing hurtful to someone with real problems.  Granted - if you write something on a site called "IAmPissedOff.com" you're asking for trouble - nothing but angry, fucked-up people are likely to respond, but I would have thought that people would get sick of calling each other a cunt by now...
  3. People impersonating others via their nicks.  Actually, I don't give a damn about this issue, but some of you people seem to.
Your suggestion about tag registration will do little to help with number 1.  If unregistered people can still post, then I'll still need to always keep an eye on the site to check what's been posted.

Regarding number 2:  Forcing people to register in order to respond will not stop them flaming anyone with their responses - they'll just register and then continue to flame.  I could ban them for flaming, of course, but if I do, then they'll just put those responses into new rants - which will exacerbate the problem.

Problem 3 would go away, of course, but I'm not going to do a couple of days coding to allieviate a problem I don't care about.

So I still don't know what to do.  I'm seriously considering shutting the site down, and writing it off as a failed experiment.

But thank you again for your suggestions.  I think you're very close to a solution.  If you or anyone else can fine-tune your suggestions to the point where they can fix my problems, please let me know!

» NEW SITE RULE, FROM ADMIN

I've added a new rule:  No more rants that slag off another ranter on this site.  For example, "HU4L is a pedophile", "Wife Smasher is a loser", "Occultist is a wanker", etc etc etc.  It's boring and it's polluting this site, which is supposed to be for people who have genuine greivances.  It's turned into a slag-fest between bored children who have nothing better to do than hang out on a website and abuse each other.

ALL SUCH RANTS WILL BE DELETED, ALONG WITH ALL THEIR RESPONSES.

If you really want to abuse each other so much, use the chat room.

You can still abuse each other in responses (only because I'm too lazy to read through every response and delete the bullshit ones), but you can no longer create posts just for the purpose of abusing someone else on this site.

If you're unhappy about this new rule, then too bad.  Grow up, get a life, and find some other place to abuse perfect strangers.  I created this site for a purpose, and you people are perverting that purpose.  I'll delete anything that violates the rules.  Why?  Because it's MY website.  If you want to abuse each other, go and make your own website.

» Your suggestions

Thank you for all your suggestions.  We have made the following enhancements to the site:

  • The list of rants page now shows how many responses each rant has
  • The Rant # of each rant on the site is now shown, for easy searching later (see below)
  • There is a new Search facility, in the top-left corner of the site, where you can search for rants using keywords or the Rant # (or the rant's new tagline - see below)
  • There is an Advanced Search facility, where you can also search for rants by category or by the gender, age or country of origin of the person that wrote the rant.
  • If you want to come back to the site in future and easily find your own rants, you can now optionally add a "tagline" (or nickname) to the end of the rant (e.g. Pete99 or LilJoe).  When you return to the site, you can use the Search box to search for your tagline
  • We now have a Rant of the Month page, where especially fine rants are collected by the site's Admin
There was also a suggestion made that we reverse the order of responses to rants so that the most recent are at the top.  We will not be doing that - that would decrease the readability of the thread of responses.  Most forum sites list a post's responses from oldest to newest, as we do.  The only large site that does them newest-to-oldest is YouTube.

Thanks for all your suggestions.  Keep 'em coming.

» Verification codes are gone!

We've come up with a better way of avoiding form-spam on this site than forcing all you fine people to enter a verification code every time you want to have a rant.

So those ugly 4-digit codes that you had to type in every time are a thing of the past.

You're welcome.

» Google Ads are coming

In order to fund the continuing existence of this site, we are shortly going to be adding some small, text-only ads from Google down the side of this site.

You're welcome to bitch and complain about this, if it makes you feel better, even as a response to this post.

The more you click on these ads, the more money I make, and the more likely I am to keep developing and hosting this site.
